About Coir Roots
Driven by the belief that challenges can give rise to opportunities, CoirRoots was founded during Sri Lanka’s economic crisis in 2019. As engineers, we established a few key criteria for our venture: the business must be sustainable, prioritize genderequality, and create well-paid jobs to reduce the need for migration. After thorough research, we identified a usinessopportunity in coconut husk-based grow bags, a soil substitute substrate. To strengthen our team, we partnered with specialist in the field, welcoming a pioneer in Sri Lanka’s coir industry with over 35 years of experience.
After months of meticulous planning and construction, we are proud to announce the establishment of a state-of-the-art facility that employs members of the local community. Our production process utilises solar energy and repurpose waste products from coconut cultivation as the only raw material for our growth medium.
We have experienced significant growth, doubling our output capacity within a few months to meet increasing market demand. Our success is driven by a commitment to deliver high-quality products in a timely manner and at competitive prices. With sustainable agriculture as our foundation, we are focused on further expansion.

Directors' Messages
Developing CoirRoots to the company it is today has been a passion project rather than work. I left Melbourne in 2013 to return to Sri Lanka to help my country benefit from the education I have received. As a Civil Engineer I was able to achieve this dream until the economic crisis in 2019. The chaos this crisis brought also saw the birth of many export-oriented businesses which were much needed for many years.
At CoirRoots, we’ve achieved exactly what we set out to do—producing a sustainable agricultural product that not only meets our standards but also makes a positive impact on the community and economy. As a mechanical engineer with a specialization in Robotics and autonomous systems, my journey began in the world of cutting-edge technology. After several years working as a robotics engineer, I realized the potential in Agriculture. As we innovate, we must ensure that our methods of growing food are sustainable and resilient. It was at this point we embarked on a new path by founding CoirRoots. This transition from tech to agriculture has been nothing short of eye-opening.
